Each Rapra Review Report comprises a brief expert overview of the stated topic; this is supported
and extended by a detailed, indexed bibliography, whose value is augmented by concise abstracts for
every entry. Flexible Packaging Adhesives, Coatings and
Processes concentrates on the adhesives and
coatings, and the converting technologies, which enable flexible packaging materials to be used in
increasingly diverse and demanding applications.
This review is organized in three main sections adhesives, coatings, and processes. The first
section includes discussions of one-component isocyanate-based moisture curing adhesives and two
component polyol- and isocyanate-based adhesives; water-borne adhesives in the context of
polyurethane dispersions; and an assessment of the first, second, third, and fourth generation solventless
adhesives for flexible packaging laminating applications. The features and potentials of energy cured
adhesives are also evaluated.
The section on coatings for flexible packaging addresses the performance properties and the health
and safety issues associated with heat seal coatings and printing inks; it also covers overprint and
release coating applications, the use of barrier coatings in pharmaceutical packaging, the technology of
primer coatings, and the use of anti-fog and anti-static coatings.
The final section, on flexible packaging processes, describes the properties of adhesive and
extrusion lamination, including a comparison of the features of the various laminating processes; presents
a summary of solution, emulsion, extrusion, and dispersion coating; discusses gravure and
flexographic printing technologies; and covers equipment used in formfillseal operations. Heat sealing
and cold sealing are also addressed.
Target Audience: This is an essential reference for individuals in the flexible packaging, adhesive,
and coating supplier industries.
