This book guides the reader through the process of making paper, pointing out where interruptions
can occur and where elements which are added to the system can cause problems in that phase
or subsequent ones of the papermaking process. Its primary goal is to provide the information
needed to understand how to track down and solve problems at their source, rather than where the
problems become apparent. There is in-depth coverage of fibers and their preparation as related to papermaking.
From the Foreword: “This book is not what can be called a standard item. It is the compendium
of nearly 80 years of papermaking experience by the two authors. The papermaking process starts
with the fibers, and this is where we start the book. Papermakers must be aware of and have a
working knowledge of the uniformity of the quality of fibers that are coming into their systems, and they
must be able to talk to those who are preparing the fibers. For this reason, we have broken the
papermaking process down in a way that follows the fibers from the preparation processes to the reel and from
there to the user of the paper...”
Target Audience: Anyone involved in the papermaking process, including production operators
and supervisors, quality and process technologists, and maintenance personnel.
