This monograph discusses the properties and uses of starches, specifically the application of starch
and starch products for surface sizing and coating of paper and paperboard. It is a completely revised
and updated edition of Starch and Starch Products in Surface
Coating, published in 1990. It offers a
comprehensive look at the subject, including new chapters on surface sizing, size press coating, principles of
the coating process, and the treatment of starch in effluent from the paper mill.
From the Preface: “...There have been many changes in the paper industry and its use of starch
since the last edition of this monograph in 1990. Increased rates of paper production, new paper
grades, higher quality demands, changes in printing methods, and the introduction of new surface
sizing, coating, and finishing techniques have made it necessary to publish an upgraded and expanded
new edition...It is my sincere hope that this monograph will serve the paper industry well as a source
of information and a guide to further advancement in the use of starch and its many products for the
cost effective production of superior grades of paper and paperboard.“
Target Audience: Operating personnel in the paper and paperboard industry, as well as
researchers concerned with starch and starch products intended for use in surface sizing and coating of paper.
