Surface Analysis

In addition to technological advances pushing the development of adhesion and interfacial sciences, recent experimental and computational tools have helped pull these areas forward. Novel spectroscopic techniques and improved equipment has led to a better understanding of bond formation and breaking upon contact and separation. In addition, recent advances in computer technology have facilitated both the acquisition of data and the enhancement of theoretical understanding of adhesion and interfacial phenomena.

The papers contained in this volume were originally presented at the Fundamentals of Adhesion and Interfaces Symposium, held in Chicago at the August 1993 meeting of the American Chemical Society. The papers were originally reviewed and published in two special issues of the Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology.

From the Preface: “Surfaces are everywhere and the importance of their interactions transcends individual technologies. Some of the technological areas where surfaces play a vital role are friction, wear, triboelectrification, surface contamination control in microelectronics, bioadhesion, particle adhesion, pharmacology, agriculture, electrophotography, electronics packaging, semiconductor fabrication, and, of course, adhesive bonding. Accordingly, the fields of adhesion and interfacial sciences have become quite multidisciplinary in recent years...”

Target Audience: Academic and industrial scientists and technologists concerned with adhesion and interfacial phenomena.
