This volume presents state-of-the-art investigations of properties and processes at
solidliquid interfaces with the same precision as is standard in ultra-high-vacuum-based surface science.
Using combinations of in situ and ex situ experimental methods, fundamental and relevant phenomena
such as adsorption and desorption of ions and molecules, restructuring of surfaces, thin film
and nanocluster growth, and electrochemical reactions on the micrometer scale are addressed. The
overview includes a wide range of experimental techniques and examples of solidliquid interfaces,
and aims at stimulating an expansion of research in this type of interface science.
From the Preface: “...Some of the largest-scale industrial processes such as flotation, metal
recovery and refinement, galvanization, electrolysis, passivation, etc. are based on phenomena at
solidliquid interfaces. Macroscopically these phenomena are well described. Their characterization on the
atomic and molecular level, however, constitutes a new dimension of complexity, and, thus, scientific
challenge, because the concealment of the interface between two condensed phases excludes the
application of most of the established [surface science] techniques...”
Target Audience: Upper-level students, researchers and technologists in academia and industry
interested in micro- nano-scale understanding of solidliquid interfaces.
