This handbook and user's guide serves as both a reference and tutorial for
understanding fluoropolymer coatings, their application, and their end uses. It discusses the basics of
fluorocoating formulations, from monomers and solvents to pigments, extenders, fillers, binders, and other
additives. It also describes various coating and curing processes, surface preparation, defects and
troubleshooting, performance testing, health and safety issues, and a brief sampling of commercial
applications. The appendix on chemical resistance of fluoropolymers is extensive, comprising over a quarter of
the book.
From the Preface: “...In contrast to the earlier works in the PDL Fluorocarbon Series, this book is
not only a reference book but also more tutorial in nature. It teaches the practice and theory of
fluorinated coatings at every step...The contents of this book should help [end-users] understand some of
the problems encountered, interpret their own observations, and arrive at possible solutions. A
better understanding will also lead to better communication between the coaters and coatings
suppliers, which can shorten product and process development time...Most of the chapters have very few
references because what I have included is what I have learned during twenty-five years
developing, formulating, and studying fluoropolymer coatings around the world. There are lots of potential
references in the public literature...”
Target Audience: Design engineers, fluoropolymer formulators, coaters, materials scientists,
polymer chemists, chemical and plastics engineers, and graduate level students interested in
fluropolymer coatings.
